Emotion in Writing

Reason for Choosing the Topic

Writing with emotion is widely used in public readings such as books, TV shows, newspaper, movie and a variety of writing venues. It arouses personal connections. I prefer the writing with emotion because it allows readers or viewers of a novel, TV show, and movie to build up the personal connection. Such connection makes them feel the emotion when the writer was writing and makes the writing much more powerful, profound, creative and outstanding.

Emotional Writing
"Emotional writing, or what is often called expressive writing, is a very specific intervention that has been studied since the mid-1980s." (1)

Significance

Emotion is people’s understanding and reflection of objective things. The reflection is expressed by joy, anger, fear, sadness and so on. When it applied to writing, we must convey our real thoughts and feelings by every single word or phrase.
1. Emotion is the internal motivation for writing
We all know that the object are various, people will show different attitudes toward the life they are experiencing such as joy and relaxation for the success or the regret and self-examination for the failure. Writing comes from real life, and we are inspired to write in order to capture the feelings and collect them. From this point of view, we can see emotion in writing as a motivation and driving force.
2. Emotion influences the whole writing process
A good composition calls for the participation of emotions, and the elements should join the whole writing process.1) The theme of the composition coordinates with the writer’s cathartic or relaxing eagerness.
2) The emotion takes part in the choice of writing material such as people, scenery, words and phrases. What’s more, it can also happen in the processing, reconstruction and transformation.
3) The emotion is significant in the structure of a composition. When the composer could handle the discipline well, he/she would organize the work with the emotion gurgling like a flow of stream.

Classification

In terms of composition, emotion falls into three divisions: rational, artistic and social ones. Each has its own characteristics. The first kind is the basis of writing, and, hence, is yet to be refined; The second lends itself to a reference for writing as it is improvement on human emotions; The last one merit cultivation, for it serves as the assessment of writing level and the realm of thought the composer has arrived in.

Method

"How to do emotional writing? We can do this basic exercise that Dr. James Pennebaker assigns to people: Over the next 4 days, write about your deepest emotions and thoughts - about the emotional upheaval that has been influencing your life the most. In your writing, really let go and explore the event and how it has affected you. You might tie this experience to your childhood, your relationship with your parents, people you have loved or love now, or even your career. Write continuously for 20 minutes. To get more out of this writing you can go to a quite room were you can sit undisturbed for 20 -30 minutes."(2)

When the feelings are still fresh, write it down because you're in the right moment to tell your story. When finish writing, you need to calm down and take another look at your work.Edit your work to make it more sensible for readers. Emotions are all well and wonderful to get readers to invest in your work, but too much feeling may mislead their own feelings.

You can write about what you are passionate about. Strong feelings make readers understand why you're interested in subjects such as politics or life's injustices. The only hitch in this is that you have to make the writing less about yourself and more about the subject. You can make a few references about yourself to show why you're interested in a certain subject and keep in mind that you're writing about a subject, not a longer version of a fan letter. It's best to avoid sounding like a stalker.

"Finally, emotional writing can be used to sell, or sink, your work. Give your writing some feeling, but not too much. You don't want your story, script or poem to read like a movie of the week. Always remember to take a step back to allow yourself and work to settle down. Publish your work when you've read through it again with a clearer head. Once you're sure your writing is perfect, submit it and let the chips fall where they may."(2)
